Resumen
This paper presents some results from a doctoral thesis, which investigates the meaning of the internal energy concept for 29 high school students from Fundação Escola Técnica Liberato Salzano Vieira da Cunha, Novo Hamburgo, RS, Brazil. The objective is to diagnose how students give meaning to the internal energy concept by means of solving situations in terms of Ausubel’s theory of meaningful learning and Vergnaud’s theory of conceptual fields. The results initially showed that the internal energy concept had no meaning for the students, but after studying it there have been advances in the conceptualization and students have come to understand that greater volume bodies (of same substance) have greater internal energy and that internal energy varies according to temperature.
