Abstract
In this paper we attempt to shed some light on the social context of the phenomenon of foundlings in eighteenth century Spain, and how it was addressed by the the institutions -generally religious ones- that attempted to mitigate the pathetic consequences of the problem. We also examine the shifting attitudes towards infancy, and more specifically towards foundlings, observed in the second half of the century. High mortality rates and squalour are intertwined with attempts at reform within the pardigm of charity, leading to modern expressions of welfare.
