Abstract

This paper deals with the role played by the emperor Maximilian I in House of Habsburg ascent to the European power through his family members. It is well known his intervention in the double alliance drawn up with the Catholic Monarchs to arrange the marriage of his children, Philip and Margaret. However, the leading role he played in seeking agreements using his granddaughters has been more unnoticed due to it was developed in his last years and coincided in time with the rise of future Charles I of Spain and V of Germany. The complex and active policy he developed around his descendants is reflected in the emperor’s correspondence maintained with his daughter Margaret, governor of the Netherlands and tutor of infant Charles and his sisters Eleanor, Isabella and Mary.
