Abstract

We present preliminary paleomagnetic results from Santa Maria Amajac paleolake (state of Hidalgo, Mexico). Apart from TH and AF demagnetization, susceptibility, IRM, hysteresis loops and thermomagnetic curves have been measured. They revealed the presence of high coercivity ferromagnetic minerals. The quality of the paleomagnetic directions will allow to carry out a more complete magnetostratigraphic study in the future, which permits the timing of the area for a better understanding of geological and paleontological events that have taken place in the paleolake. The polarities obtained in the pilot study are all normal and we tentatively interpreted as Gauss (3.5-2.6 Ma). This should be verified in future studies.
