Abstract

This doctoral thesis investigated the extent to which evidence of meaningful learning of knowledge of equations and graphs occurred in 21 students of the first semester of the Administration course at a private university in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, within the framework of the Theory of Meaningful Learning by Ausubel and the one of Conceptual Fields, by Vergnaud. The methodology adopted was qualitative, in which a Potentially Meaningful Teaching Unit (PMTU) was constructed, as proposed by Moreira, which included situations in Mathematics, in line with the administration area. The records produced by the students were analyzed in the light of the theories and provided indicators that the participants who showed more signs of being on the way to meaningful learning and advances in the domain of the conceptual field in question were the same ones for which the PMTU showed to be more successful. As a result, the Teaching Unit promoted different levels of success.
